Two Men Die Trying To “Dukes of Hazard” A Drawbridge
It’s a very sad story. Two men meaninglessly lost their lives doing something completely unnecessary.
On Friday night, two men from Texas decided to try and jump their car over an open drawbridge.
Accord to NBC News,
Louisiana State Police responded to a single-car crash shortly after 2 a.m. at the Black Bayou Bridge about six miles south of Lake Charles. Investigators said the bridge was closed to traffic to let a boat pass.
A witness told police that the passenger got out of the car and pushed the gate arm up. The man then got back into the car as the driver drove toward the ramp at the end of the bridge, the police department said in a press release on its Facebook page.
The press release read:
Calcasieu Parish – Shortly after 2:00 a.m. on May 24, 2019, Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 384 (Big Lake Road) at the Black Bayou Bridge about 6 miles south of Lake Charles. The crash claimed the lives of 23-year-old Alejandro Cazares of McAllen, TX and 32-year-old Roberto Alejandro Moreno of Edinburg, TX.
The initial investigation revealed that Cazares was traveling south on LA Hwy 384 in a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze when he came to a pontoon bridge that was closed to vehicular traffic to allow a boat to pass on the Intracoastal Waterway. According to a witness, the passenger (Moreno) exited the vehicle and pushed the gate arm up. Cazares drove under the gate and picked up Moreno before proceeding towards the ramp located at the end of the bridge. After stopping briefly, Cazares placed the vehicle in reverse then accelerated forward in an attempt to “jump” the ramp of the bridge. The vehicle became airborne, landed in the waterway, and sank to the bottom.
Cazares was unable to exit the vehicle, and Moreno was located outside of the submerged vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office.
Toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Division and the U.S. Coast Guard performed search and recovery.
Troop D has investigated 13 fatal crashes resulting in 16 deaths in 2019.
A witness said that the passenger actually got out of the car to push a gate out of the way so that they could drive through and jump the ramp of the bridge.
