Turner’s announcement, including the statement, “Today, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence has made available to all Members of Congress information concerning a serious national security threat,” lacked detail, preceding a planned briefing for congressional leaders at the White House.
This prompted members to convene in the highly secure SCIF for further information. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, though evasive in his response, highlighted his proactive approach in arranging a forthcoming briefing with the ‘gang of eight.’
While Sullivan acknowledged the range of threats faced by the nation, he expressed surprise at Turner’s public disclosure, stating, “That’s been on the books so I am a bit surprised that Congressman Turner came out publicly today, in advance of a meeting on the books, for me to go sit with him alongside our intelligence and defense professionals tomorrow.”
Despite the gravity of the situation, Rep. Jim Himes urged restraint, advising against panic while emphasizing the necessity for discretion due to the sensitivity of the issue.
Amidst the uncertainty, speculation abounds. A source within the Democratic Party, speaking anonymously, underscored the seriousness of the matter, labeling it as ‘a highly concerning and destabilizing’ issue. However, Himes sought to allay fears, reassuring the public that while the issue is significant, there is no cause for alarm.
