Second Dem Senator Hospitalized
Democrats just aren’t living up to expectations this Congress session after yet another Senator has been hospitalized recently.
California Senator Dianne Feinstein has been hospitalized with shingles, according to recent reports. The 89-year-old Democrat announced on Thursday that she was receiving treatment for the condition, which caused her to miss Senate votes earlier in the week.
Feinstein’s hospitalization comes at a critical time for Senate Democrats, who are currently holding onto a narrow majority in the chamber. With Vice President Kamala Harris serving as the tie-breaking vote, any absence from a Democratic senator could potentially tip the balance of power in favor of Republicans.
Feinstein’s illness has left Democrats without an outright majority in the Senate, as they now hold only 48 seats, but so do the Republicans which has brought Kamala Harris back into the picture.
Despite her hospitalization, Feinstein expressed confidence that she would make a full recovery and return to work soon. In a statement released on Thursday, she thanked her doctors and nurses for their care and urged others to get vaccinated against shingles.
“I was diagnosed over the February recess with a case of shingles. I have been hospitalized and am receiving treatment in San Francisco and expect to make a full recovery. I hope to return to the Senate later this month,” the 89-year-old California senator said.
Shingles is a painful rash caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. It can be particularly dangerous for older adults like Feinstein, who may experience complications such as nerve damage or vision loss.
Feinstein will soon be out of Congress and Adam Schiff is actually running for her seat. But hopefully he’ll lose and we can see to it that he’s no longer in Congress. But it is California, so you know how that typically goes.
