Room Erupts After Riley Gaines Wrecks Woke Anthropologist
Riley Gaines, a former University of Kentucky swimmer and Independent Women’s Forum spokesperson, recently asked an anthropologist at the University of Pittsburgh a question that left the room in shock. During her Monday night speech, Gaines asked the professor if he could differentiate between two sets of bones based on their biological sex. To her surprise, the professor said no.
“I actually have a question for you. You being an anthropologist, which anthropology is the study of human civilization–” Gaines said before the anthropologist could be heard noting anthropology does include a focus on biology.
“So if you were to dig up a human, two humans, in 100 years from now, both man and woman, could you tell the difference, strictly off of bones?”
“No,” the anthropologist said.
The question was met with disbelief from the audience, who erupted into laughter as they realized what had been said. The professor, Gabby Yearwood, is a senior lecturer at the school’s anthropology department and has worked in forensics for many years. He argued that there is no difference between male and female skeleton systems and that it would be impossible to tell them apart based solely on bone structure.
“I’m not sure why I’m being laughed at if I’m the expert in the room,” the anthropologist said. “Have any of you been to archeological sites? Have any of you studied biological anthropology? I’m just saying, I’ve got over 150 years of data, I’m just curious as to why I’m being laughed at.”
This statement goes against decades of research done by anthropologists and forensic scientists who have studied the differences between male and female bone structures. It has long been accepted that there are distinct differences between male and female skeletons which can be used to identify gender when examining remains.
“I actually, believe it or not, have put a lot of research into this because –” Gaines said before the anthropologist cut her off and said, “I have a PhD,” prompting the crowd to once again break out in laughter.
Gaines’ speech focused on trans athletes competing in women’s sports and how it is not progressive or fair for them to do so. She believes that allowing trans athletes to compete with women gives them an unfair advantage over other female athletes due to their physical differences…because it does.
The debate surrounding trans athletes competing in women’s sports has become increasingly heated as more states pass laws banning them from doing so. While some argue that these laws are discriminatory against transgender people, others believe they are necessary in order to ensure fairness in competition among all genders.
