Republicans Move to Impeach Secretary of State After Removing Trump from Ballot
Just when you thought politics couldn’t get any crazier, along comes a story that makes you shake your head and laugh. It seems that Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, a Democrat, decided to play fast and loose with the rules and kick former President Donald Trump off her state’s presidential primary ballot. Say what now?
Bellows decided that Trump violated the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause on January 6, 2021, and used this as grounds to disqualify him. Despite multiple challenges to his candidacy, Bellows rejected a bid by Trump’s legal team to get her to recuse herself from making a ruling on his eligibility. Talk about playing judge, jury, and executioner.
Republican state representative John Andrews wasn’t having any of it. He blasted Bellows’ decision, calling it an example of “raw partisanship” and accusing her of overstepping her authority. In his words, “Donald J. Trump has met all qualifications for the March 2024 Republican Presidential Primary. He should be allowed on the ballot. This is raw partisanship and has no place in the offices of our state’s Constitutional Officers.”
And guess what? Andrews is fighting back. He’s moved to impeach Bellows, arguing that she is barring an American citizen and 45th President of the United States, who is convicted of no crime or impeachment, their right to appear on a Maine Republican Primary ballot.
But here’s the kicker. Andrews suspects that Bellows’ move was partly motivated by her own political ambitions. He suggested that she’s trying to raise her profile ahead of the Maine governor’s race in 2026. As he put it, “This is hyper-partisanship on full display. A Secretary of State APPOINTED (not elected) by legislative Democrats bans President Trump from the 2024 ballot so that she can jockey for position in the 2026 Democrat Primary for Governor. Banana Republic isn’t just a store at the mall.”
Maine Republicans are already considering a workaround. They’re thinking of moving to a caucus system to bypass Bellows’ ruling. Maine GOP Chairman Joel Stetkis told WGAN, “This political activism by Shenna Bellows, it’s not going to stand,”
Folks, this is a prime example of politics gone awry. When partisan agendas overrule fair play and the democratic process, everyone loses. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to seeing how this drama unfolds.
