Biden Attends G7 Summit In Italy
In a rather unusual turn of events, President Biden made headlines with an awkward salute to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as he arrived at the G7 summit in southern Puglia, Italy. The 81-year-old president, who was the last of the world leaders to arrive, shuffled onto the stage where Meloni was waiting.
As the two exchanged pleasantries, Meloni pointed towards a frame bearing the G7 logo, which each leader in attendance was to sign. After signing, Biden began to walk off the platform but paused to salute Meloni, raising his right hand over his eye in a gesture that seemed out of place.
The G7, an informal forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, meets annually to discuss critical economic and security issues. This year’s summit is particularly focused on global conflicts, the rise of artificial intelligence, and pressing issues in Africa. Additionally, there are plans to pledge new assistance to Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia.
Following the initial greetings, Biden and Meloni were joined by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The three-day summit promises to be a significant event, with discussions expected to cover a wide range of urgent global topics.
In a historic moment, Pope Francis will address the G7 summit, becoming the first pope to do so. He is expected to speak about the ethical implications of artificial intelligence and renew his call for peaceful resolutions to the conflicts in Ukraine and between Israel and Hamas.
Before the summit, an agreement was being finalized to loan $50 million to Ukraine, utilizing interest from Russia’s frozen central bank assets as collateral. The United States is expected to provide the bulk of these funds through a loan backed by windfall profits from approximately $300 billion in immobilized Russian assets, most of which are held in European Union nations.
The wasn’t the only odd occurrence, below is a video of Biden with other leaders watching a sky diver when he wonders off and needs to be retrieved.
