Maureen Dowd Column Reports On Ducklo Phone Call
In her recent column, New York Times writer Maureen Dowd criticized the Biden campaign for trying to change the wording in one of her articles. The original article reported on a verbal slip by President Biden. In her Sunday column, titled “Joe Biden, in the Goodest Bunker Ever,” Dowd shared what happened after she wrote her Saturday column. She had quoted Biden saying to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that he would stay happy in the race, even if Trump won, as long as he did “the goodest job” he could. ABC News first wrote down this phrase but then changed it to “I did the good as job as I know I can do,” with an editor’s note saying they made the change for clarity.
Dowd explained that T.J. Ducklo, a Biden campaign spokesperson, contacted her to point out the “corrected” transcript and suggested she change her column to match ABC’s updated version.
Sure seems like ABC “updated” their version for Ducklo doesn’t it?
Dowd and her researcher had listened to the interview several times and believed Biden did say “goodest.” But Ducklo insisted that the Times should follow ABC News’ correction because ABC had done the interview and checked the transcript.
It was surprising that the Biden team asked for this change, especially with the current scrutiny they are under. It seems like the Democrats are not used to dealing with the press this way.
When asked if the Biden team pushed ABC to change the transcript, Ducklo denied it. He said ABC News makes its own decisions. He also explained that ABC had listened to the audio tape again and decided to correct it, which left Dowd confused.
Dowd thought the White House wanted to control the story about Biden’s age and speaking mistakes. She felt frustrated with how the White House handled the situation. Even with the wording change, Biden’s mixed-up response in the interview was not well received.
The press is really criticizing Biden now.
However, one might wonder how many similar requests were made before the well-known debate, and if the press complied then.Biden Busted Trying Edit Another Transcript
