Man Receives Unprecedented Heart Transplant…From a Pig!
We have seen some serious advancements in technology in our time. We are at a point in our civilization and in the history of the entire planet in which the technology that we have now far surpasses anything even remotely close to it outside of the past 50 years really.
So for the entire history of the earth however old you say it may be whether that be several thousand years, millions of years, or billions of years, we are at a high point in technology.
There are both pros and cons that come along with this in that technology can be used for both good and evil, but it is worth noting that many medical advancements have been made thanks to technology and people are living longer and having better lives as a result of it. Just recently a man who had serious heart disease was given a heart from a pig for the first time ever.
Now at first glance, this sounds insane and that it probably would not work however this pig was genetically modified in such a way as to accommodate this sort of organ which would be compatible with a human being.
The New York Times reported on the “first successful transplant of a pig’s heart into a human being,” a procedure that lasted eight hours and took place in Baltimore, Maryland, on Friday. The man, David Bennett Sr., received the heart and was in good condition on Monday, per surgeons at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
“It creates the pulse, it creates the pressure, it is his heart,” said Dr. Bartley Griffith, who carried out the operation. He is the director of the cardiac transplant program at the center.
Griffith added, “It’s working and it looks normal. We are thrilled, but we don’t know what tomorrow will bring us. This has never been done before.”
So what is it that we are actually to make of this? Well if it does prove to be successful then this could potentially save countless lives of people who are awaiting organs in order to get a transplant whether that be for a heart or lung or some other organ that they may not be able to get from a donor in time. That is as I said if this does prove to be successful and that they can replicate other types of organs as well. Even if they can’t and they can only do hearts that’s still going to save many lives.
