Joe Biden Dishonors Sandy Hook Victims by Gaslighting Americans
As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Sandy Hook massacre, it is a time to pause and reflect on the tragedy of that day in 2012 and honor those who were lost.
But in the wake of the tragedy, it is also important to consider the solutions proposed by those in power to address the epidemic of gun violence in this country. Joe Biden instead decided that this was a good time to gaslight people who believe in the Constitution.
Biden called for Americans to take action and have “societal guilt” for not doing more to prevent gun violence sooner.
All of us as conservatives believe it’s important to address gun violence in America, but disagree with Biden’s call for an assault weapons ban. While an assault weapons ban may sound like a reasonable solution to the problem, it sends the wrong message to law-abiding citizens who own firearms and use them safely.
Rather than taking away the rights of responsible gun owners, we should focus on encouraging responsible gun ownership and providing better access to mental health services.
Some believe that the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, signed into law by Biden in June, is a step in the right direction. It gives grants to states for “red flag” laws, enhances background checks to include juvenile records, and closes the “boyfriend loophole” by keeping guns away from unmarried dating partners convicted of abuse. It will also require enhanced background checks for people ages 18 to 21 and funding for youth mental health services.
We should focus on strengthening background checks and ensuring that those who aren’t supposed to own a gun aren’t able to purchase one. We should also invest in targeted programs that provide mental health services to those who need it most.
It is important to remember that the vast majority of gun owners are responsible, law-abiding citizens. We should strive to find solutions that both protect the rights of responsible gun owners and keep guns out of the hands of criminals. That is the best way to honor the victims of Sandy Hook and prevent future tragedies.
