Harris Holds Town Hall With Liz Cheney
Kamala Harris’ latest “town hall” with Liz Cheney was a disaster from the moment Maria Shriver opened the event by informing the audience that all questions had been “pre-determined.” It’s hard to imagine a worse way to start an event meant to showcase genuine interaction with voters, but that wasn’t even the most embarrassing part of the night. What followed was a cringe-worthy display of Harris’ infamous lack of authenticity, something the Trump campaign quickly seized upon.

Here’s the thing about Kamala Harris: she suffers from what could best be described as “theater kid syndrome.” She’s overly rehearsed, painfully inauthentic, and seems unable to step out of a persona crafted by her handlers. When the camera is rolling, Harris doesn’t just speak; she performs. The problem is, she’s a terrible actor, and the result is awkward and uncomfortable for everyone watching. Worse, she has no ability to stay in character. She randomly laughs at moments that aren’t remotely funny, a habit that leaves her looking unserious, even when she’s trying to make serious points.

A perfect example of this came during the town hall when Harris attempted to take a swipe at Donald Trump. With dramatic pauses that would make a middle-school drama coach cringe, she said, “In many, many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man.” Then she tried to deliver the punchline: “But the consequences of him being president of the United States are brutally serious.” It fell flat. It was clear that Harris had rehearsed this moment word-for-word, knowing the questions ahead of time thanks to Shriver’s embarrassing admission. What could have been an opportunity for Harris to show some real engagement ended up as a robotic recital of canned lines.

Anyone with experience in public speaking knows that pre-written answers, especially in a town hall setting, are a terrible idea. They sound forced and unnatural, exactly the opposite of what you want when you’re trying to connect with an audience. Yet, there was Harris, delivering her prepackaged zingers like someone reading a teleprompter at a high school debate.
And then there was Liz Cheney. As the event dragged on, Cheney’s body language spoke volumes. She seemed completely checked out—eyes wandering, staring into space, and occasionally casting sideways glances during Harris’ over-produced answers. It was as if Cheney was realizing in real-time that she’d hitched herself to a sinking ship. Whatever promises or political favors Cheney had hoped to gain from this bizarre alliance with Harris were evaporating right before her eyes.

Cheney’s partnership with Harris, a puzzling decision from the start, now looks like it’s headed toward one final humiliation. The body language doesn’t lie—Cheney knows she made a mistake. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but it’s one she chose.
