Harris Has Sit Down With Whitmer
Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign took an unexpected turn when a hot mic caught her in an unguarded moment discussing her struggle to win over male voters with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
The scene took place at a bar in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where Harris seemed momentarily unaware of the live microphones surrounding her. “So, my thing is we need to move ground among men,” Harris was heard confiding to Whitmer at the Trak Houz Bar and Grill, only to realize a moment later that their private conversation was anything but.
Fox News has since reported that the gender gap has widened considerably for both Harris and former President Trump as election day approaches.
Recent polling from The New York Times shows Harris leading Trump among women voters, 54% to 42%, while Trump commands a significant lead with male voters, at 55% to 41%.
The disparity was on full display last week when Harris deflected a similar question about male support during an NBC interview. Pressed on the issue, Harris pointed to the diversity of her campaign crowds, sidestepping any specifics on the gap itself.
The Harris campaign has found recent polls especially concerning. One GenForward poll from the University of Chicago revealed that Trump is making surprising inroads among young Black men and Latino men, demographics that traditionally lean Democratic.
According to the poll, 26% of Black men between 18 and 40 say they would vote for Trump, alongside 44% of young Latino men—a noticeable increase from his 2020 support levels in these groups. While Harris still holds an overall lead in some polls, the upward trend in Trump’s support among these key groups underscores the challenges she faces in securing broad-based support.
With both candidates vying to close the gender gap, Harris’s hot mic moment highlights the urgency felt on both sides.
For Harris, the question remains: Can she bridge the gap and win back support from undecided male voters, or will Trump’s unexpected appeal with men continue to tilt the scales?
