California Governor Gavin Newsom recently decided that he was going to take an unprecedented step in going after the gun industry by allowing individuals, state and local governments, and the state attorney general to sue gun manufacturers when people kill other with their weapons.

Here’s what I see happening with this: while residents of California may be able to sue the gun manufacturers for “neglect” by manufacturing weapons that are “abnormally dangerous and likely to create an unreasonable risk of harm to public health and safety in California”, that doesn’t mean that they’re going to win those cases.

We don’t do this for car manufacturers. The big piece of propaganda that the Democrats like to constantly push is the idea that the gun industry is the only industry where people can’t sue them. We all know that this isn’t true and we all know what the other manufacturer is that you cannot sue. Gavin Newsom even mentions that propaganda in his video.

A semi-automatic weapon is not an abnormally unreasonable weapon that presents unreasonable risk to public health. It’s the people that pose the threat.

Are his bodyguards still going to carry semi-automatic weapons? Of course, they are. Why is that? Because he knows they offer good protection. Well, then the argument will be made that these are highly trained professionals who have been properly vetted and have been determined not to pose a risk.

If that’s the case, then why not just do that with other people?

I think that all this is going to amount to is a big nothingburger. It’ll be a tool that Newsom can use for his next campaign, whether that be another run at California Governor or a run for president in 2024, which has been alluded to at time. Let’s hope that this doesn’t happen.
