Whether we choose to admit it or not, there is a lot of dark money that goes into political campaigns. People like George Soros is what keeps a lot of these Democrats afloat and able to run for Congress. There’s no way that a politician who does so poorly should be able to continue raising seemingly endless funds to win their campaigns, and honestly, that’s what seems to be the deciding factor in many races. He who spends the most, wins.

Now, a group of House Democrats recently proposed a constitutional amendment that would overturn the 2010 Supreme Court ruling in the Citizens United v. FEC case, which lifted restrictions on campaign spending by corporations, nonprofit organizations and unions. This proposed amendment seeks to “close legal loopholes” allowing these wealthy entities to influence elections with as much money as they wish, working to give power back to the people.

Rep. Adam Schiff, who has introduced this amendment each year since 2013, explained in a press release that this legislation aims to restore Americans’ faith in democracy and government. He believes that by limiting corporate and dark money in elections, we can build a healthier democracy that works for everyone, not just those with deep pockets. Rep. Dean Phillips, Pramila Jayapal, and Jim McGovern joined Rep. Schiff in introducing the amendment on Thursday.

The proposed amendment would allow Congress and state governments to set reasonable limits on how much money could be spent on campaigns or political activity without any bias towards different views or perspectives. It would also empower states to implement public campaign financing systems to reduce the impact of private wealth on election results and decision-making processes within government bodies.

Schiff expressed his excitement about the proposal via Twitter, hoping it will become law once and for all, “We need to return power to people…Unrestricted dark money has no place in our elections or democracy.” His sentiment is shared by many—especially after record spending during last year’s midterm elections when outside donors poured more than $2 billion into federal candidates’ coffers according to Open Secrets’ data tracking system. It remains unclear if this proposed amendment will become a reality, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m with the Dems on this one, because it can only help out us Republicans.
