Columbia Students File Lawsuit
Back in the spring there were numerous protests that took place at college campuses and some of them led to multiple arrests.
Well a class-action lawsuit filed against certain well-known “Squad” members in Congress? Of course, we’re referring to the representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman, both from New York, and Ilhan Omar from Minnesota. The lawsuit revolves around the anti-Israel encampment and protests that took place at Columbia University a few months back.
These distinguished Democrats stand accused of “inciting and encouraging” the protest events, as well as criticizing law enforcement’s response to these disruptive demonstrations. Protestors took over a campus quad, chanting “Free Palestine!” and even resorting to burning an Israeli flag and throwing rocks.
Emerging at the center of this controversy are five anonymous students who have lodged the formal complaint, citing the encampment as illegal and a violation of the university’s rules. They claimed that the protestors intimidated Jewish students, with instances of harassment, physical blockades, and even bullying being reported.
An important detail to be aware of is that two of the students involved in the filing are Jewish. Following the disruptive protests, Jewish students at Columbia University felt the need to pen an open letter, defending Israel. The letter praised Israel’s defense of Jewish people, its democratic values, and highlighted that it was a home to Muslims and Christians alike.
On May 31, anti-Israel protestors again established an encampment subsequent to a raid conducted by the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The original encampment seems to have sparked a sequence of similar set-ups at various colleges and universities around the nation.
The protests came with a list of demands that included universities divesting from Israeli companies, terminating academic ties with Israeli educational institutions, and advocating for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
