Alabama Passes Second Hurdle To Outlawing Abortion
The state of Alabama is one step closer to saving thousands of lives.
The Alabama State Senate voted to pass a bill which would outlaw nearly all abortions in the state.
According to Fox News,
Alabama’s state Senate passed a controversial bill on Tuesday that would outlaw nearly all abortions in the state and make performing one a felony unless the mother’s health is at risk.
The bill will make the punishment for performing abortions up to 99 years or life in prison, although the woman who received one will not be subject to a felony charge.
The vote is expected to reignite a debate over Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision from 1973 that legalized abortion across the nation, and push Supreme Court justices to re-evaluate the laws.
In debate over the bill, Senators Vivian Figures and Rodger Smitherman remarked in opposition of the bill,
“You don’t have to raise that child. You don’t have to carry that child. You don’t have to provide for that child. And yet you want to make that decision,” Sen. Vivian Davis Figures said.
Democratic Sen. Rodger Smitherman spoke in opposition of the bill, telling a personal story in which he and his wife faced a decision about whether to abort their child.
“There was a problem with this child. The 23rd chromosome did not split,” Smitherman said, later adding: “The significance is that I had the choice. The choice was my wife’s and I. The legislature did not make the choice for me.”
Let me sum this up really easily.
YOU. DO. NOT. GET. TO. DECIDE. WHO. LIVES. AND. WHO. DOESN’T. PERIOD.
It was his and his wife’s choice to decide who gets to live and who doesn’t? That’s what we’ve come to?
He said that there was a problem with the child, so they got rid of him. Not to mention how inaccurate and dangerous these tests are to begin with. There are problems with a lot of people, but that doesn’t mean we can get rid of them.
