House Speaker Nancy Pelosi defended Representative Ilhan Omar in front of the media Thursday as she addressed the accusations of Omar being anti-Semitic and making such statements.

The public statement came shortly before a vote in the House of Representatives on a resolution about anti-hate.

A reporter asked Nancy, “Do you think that Ihan Omar understands why her comments were problematic and what happens if this happens again.”

Nancy responded, “I don’t think that um, the congresswoman perhaps appreciated the full weight of how it was heard by other people, although I don’t believe it was intended in an anti-Semitic way. But the fact is if that’s how it was interpreted, we have to remove all doubt, as we have done over and over again. Something that is one resolution, addressing these forms of hatred, not mentioning her name because it’s not about her. It’s about these forms of hatred. I do not believe she understood the full weight of her words.”

“When you cross that threshold into Congress,” she continued, “your words weigh much more than when you’re shouting at somebody outside, and I feel confident that her words were not based on any anti-Semitic attitude, but that she didn’t have a full appreciation of how they landed on other people where these words have a history and a cultural impact that may have been unknown to her.”

Pelosi said she didn’t think Ilhan Omar held anti-Semitic views, but warned that she doesn’t understand the gravity of her remarks.

This simply is not true. If you just look at Ilhan Omar’s history on Twitter and how she associates with anti-Israeli terrorist organizations it is impossible to deny that she is anti-Semitic. If she truly believes what the Qur’an teaches, then she must hate Jews.

The anti-hate resolution did pass overwhelmingly, but not unanimously with a vote of 407-23.
