Senators Schatz, Durbin, and Welch File Bill
It never ceases to amaze how many elected officials seem to have skipped the day in civics class when they covered the Constitution—you know, the foundational document they swore an oath to uphold. Once again, here come the Democrats, pushing yet another half-baked scheme to “restore democracy” by abolishing the Electoral College. It’s the same tired mantra, and it’s just as misguided—and unconstitutional—as ever.
First, let’s start with some facts that Senate Democrats appear oblivious to. Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution spells it out as clearly as it can be spelled:
“Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors…”
In other words, we don’t have a direct popular vote for president. Never have. Instead, the states—sovereign entities in our federal system—hold elections to choose electors, and those electors meet to vote for the President of the United States. This system, known as the Electoral College, is both brilliant and necessary because it ensures every state—not just New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago—has a voice in choosing the president.
Without the Electoral College, the votes of rural Americans, smaller states, and less populous regions would be rendered meaningless. Candidates would ignore entire swaths of the country to focus on winning votes in a handful of major cities. The Founders, who had a pretty solid grasp of human nature and political power, understood this perfectly. The system they designed forces candidates to build broad coalitions that appeal to Americans across the country, not just within urban bubbles.
And here’s the kicker: you can’t just “abolish” the Electoral College with a bill from Congress, as these Senate Democrats seem to think. It takes a constitutional amendment, which requires a two-thirds vote in both the House and the Senate and ratification by three-fourths of the states—33 out of 50. Good luck convincing middle America to surrender its influence so California and New York can pick every president from here to eternity.

But the ignorance doesn’t stop there. The Democrats’ constant invocation of “democracy” is another farcical talking point. The United States was never designed to be a democracy. It’s a constitutional republic, as clearly stated in Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution: “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government.” The word “democracy” doesn’t appear anywhere in the Constitution. Not once.
Why? Because the Founders understood that pure democracy—the unchecked rule of the majority—is just a fast track to mob rule. They built a system with checks, balances, and federalism to protect individual liberties and minority voices. The Electoral College is a prime example of this careful design. It balances power between the states, ensuring that presidents must represent the nation as a whole—not just the loudest, most populated pockets.
Then there’s the absurd idea that the Electoral College needs to be “restored.” Restored to what, exactly? The Electoral College has been the system since the Constitution was ratified in 1788. There’s nothing to “restore.” The only thing Senate Democrats want to “restore” is their ability to rig the game in their favor, bypassing voters they find inconvenient.
Let’s not forget that the popular vote isn’t an official measure of anything. It’s a statistical curiosity, nothing more. The Constitution makes no provision for it, and it certainly doesn’t decide who becomes president. Yet the Left parades the popular vote around every time they lose in the Electoral College, as though Americans are supposed to throw out the entire system because their candidate couldn’t figure out how to appeal to the whole country. This time, Donald Trump’s commanding victory—including a 5-million vote lead over Kamala Harris—should have settled that debate.
But here’s what’s really going on. Senate Democrats aren’t confused about the Constitution; they’re hoping you are. They’re banking on voters’ ignorance of how the system works so they can peddle nonsense like this bill. In a sane country, an attempt this brazen to undermine the Constitution would be met with a political wipeout for anyone foolish enough to sign their name to it. Because let’s be clear: this kind of ignorance isn’t just embarrassing—it’s disqualifying.
