Reid Leaves Social Media Platform
Joy Reid, MSNBC’s outspoken host, announced her departure from X (formerly Twitter), joining a wave of prominent left-leaning figures ditching the platform since Elon Musk openly supported President-elect Donald Trump.
Reid, known for her fierce critiques of Trump and his supporters, posted a TikTok video showing her X account deactivation and explaining her reasons for leaving, saying that the negativity on the platform “just isn’t worth it.”
Her departure follows similar exits by Don Lemon and Lizzo, who also cited concerns over Musk’s ownership and a desire to avoid “toxicity” as they migrate to other platforms like Jack Dorsey’s new site, Bluesky.
Reid explained that she had kept her X account mainly as a news aggregator, though she stopped posting after Musk’s acquisition. “Just having it there—it was more trouble than it was worth,” she said. She criticized the platform’s content and “quality of interactions,” adding that the experience had become overwhelmingly negative.
Her departure comes as left-leaning media figures grapple with Musk’s unexpected partnership with Trump. This partnership goes beyond X’s management: Musk now heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a new position in Trump’s administration aimed at cutting government waste.
The alliance, which follows years of public feuding between Musk and Trump, has evidently caught critics by surprise.
Reid and her colleagues on MSNBC have been vocal in their frustration over the 2024 election results, with Reid using her remaining platforms to criticize various voter demographics, including Latino men who backed Trump in the election.
Meanwhile, MSNBC has been facing a sharp ratings drop since Election Day, with Nielsen reporting a plunge from six million daily viewers on election night to just under 600,000 last Thursday. The drop in viewership reflects broader dissatisfaction among some progressive audiences, particularly as Trump’s supporters celebrate Musk’s involvement in the new administration.
Since the election, Musk has been a regular presence at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, with the two figures appearing to have mended fences and formed a strategic alliance that is reshaping the political landscape.
