KJP Responds To Kamala Speech
Vice President Kamala Harris is once again in the spotlight, and not for her policies, but for her shifting accents during a recent campaign stop. Critics, both online and in the media, have slammed Harris for what many are calling a “fake” southern drawl that she adopted while speaking to union members in Detroit. The shift in tone was so blatant that people are comparing her performance to Foghorn Leghorn, the exaggerated Southern character from Looney Tunes.
Harris, now the Democratic Party’s de facto nominee after President Joe Biden was quietly pushed aside in July, made two campaign stops on Labor Day—first in Detroit and then in Pennsylvania. At the Detroit event, Harris delivered her speech with an exaggerated accent: “Ya betta thank a union memba for sick leave, ya betta thank a union memba for paid leave, ya betta thank a union memba for vacation time.” Yet, later that day in Pittsburgh, she gave the same speech in her usual tone, raising eyebrows about the sudden shift in dialect.

Comedian Chad Prather summed up the sentiment with a simple question: “What in the Foghorn Leghorn is Kamala talking about? Why is she talking like that?” Others piled on. YouTuber Dustin Mills pointed out the bizarre inconsistency, noting, “Kamala speaking like Foghorn Leghorn in Detroit and sounding normal in Pittsburgh… it is official Kamala is making Hillary 2016 campaign look competent.” Author Larry Correia added that it’s always awkward when politicians try to adopt fake accents, but he had never heard one sound quite like this.
When pressed about the accent during a White House briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tried to brush off the controversy. Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked Jean-Pierre directly, “Since when does the vice president have what sounds like a Southern accent?” Jean-Pierre, clearly irritated, dodged the question, responding, “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” and pushed back by claiming that Americans care more about the economy and health care. When Doocy persisted, Jean-Pierre shut him down, saying, “We’re moving on.”

The incident has only added fuel to conservative criticism that Harris is politically inauthentic. GOP strategist Matt Whitlock claimed that “All of politics is a performance to Kamala Harris,” accusing her of changing accents as easily as she changes policy positions. Whitlock noted that Harris has gone from pretending to be a moderate to embodying San Francisco liberalism, depending on her audience.
This isn’t the first time Harris has faced accusations of pandering with her speech. Just a few months ago, she was called out for using a similar Southern accent while speaking in Atlanta. In 2021, critics mocked her for adopting what they called a “French accent” during a tour of a COVID lab in France. Conservative commentator Greg Price, after sharing clips of the Detroit and Pittsburgh speeches, didn’t hold back, calling Harris “the fakest human being that has ever lived.”
