MSNBC Announces September Event
It seems like there might be some behind-the-scenes drama at MSNBC. According to a recent report, there’s a hint of discontent stirring behind the scenes.
You’re likely familiar with Rachel Maddow, who’s been at MSNBC for a long time and has a very lucrative contract with the network. As of late, she’s been garnering quite a lot of attention, and not everyone seems to be on board with it. As a network insider described, “Rachel is the stand-out star of the group, but she’s receiving all the attention and benefits, breeding some discontent among her colleagues.”
This news comes just weeks before MSNBC’s live convention in September (this is not the DNC convention). According to the report, Maddow’s been handed “all the goodies,” and this shift of focus seems to be sidelining other hosts like Ari Melber, Joy Reid, and Lawrence O’Donnell.
One MSNBC insider depicted the scenario as “a powder keg waiting to explode.” We’re talking about perks like a star dressing room, VIP tickets for friends, and carte blanche for promotional materials.
The controversy could stain MSNBC’s September event, which is being marketed as “an immersive day-long event” for the news outlet’s most ardent fans. The event, titled “MSNBC Live: Democracy 2024,” will feature numerous hosts like Jen Psaki, Katy Tur, Alex Wagner, and others, along with the network personalities mentioned earlier. This is all set to take place on September 7 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
In orchestrating this event, NBC executives are hoping to mirror the success of similar events that incorporate personalities from network reality shows. Rebecca Kutler, MSNBC’s senior vice president of content strategy, explained, “Our colleagues have created a really magical experience for their audience, and we have learned a lot and been inspired by what they have created.”
According to Kutler, these live events are a fresh avenue for MSNBC to connect with its primary audience. It seems the audience has been asking for more engagement and a sense of community that extends beyond just watching television.
