Judge Rules On Another Gag Order Motion In Trump Classified Doc
Things are getting spicy in the Trump classified documents case after the Judge issued a ruling on another potential gag order.
Special Counsel Jack Smith recently requested a gag order on Trump during his classified documents trial. The hope was to restrict Trump’s comments about the law enforcement officers who searched his Mar-a-Lago resort, particularly about the use of force authorized for the search.
Federal Judge Aileen Cannon was very clear in her ruling when she denied the motion. According to CNN, she described Smith’s request as “wholly lacking in substance and professional courtesy.”
This wasn’t a minor ask—Smith’s request was a bold move. Trump’s defense team called it out as an “extraordinary, unprecedented, and unconstitutional censorship.” On Monday, defense attorney Chris Kise took it a step further, asking Judge Cannon to hold all government attorneys involved in the decision to file the motion in civil contempt and impose sanctions after an evidentiary hearing.
A hearing before the ruling also got very heated as both sides clashed over claims of an alleged threat against a defense attorney. Trump is facing 40 felony counts for mishandling and withholding classified documents from his time in the White House. His longtime aide, Nauta, is also accused of moving boxes of sensitive materials to prevent federal agents from retrieving them.
During this hearing, Nauta’s attorney, Stanley Woodward, got under prosecutor David Harbach’s skin when making an allegation in court. Harbach fiercly denied Woodwards claim and reportedly shouted, “Mr. Woodward’s story of what happened at that meeting is a fantasy,” while banging his hand on the table. Judge Cannon jumped in, telling Harbach to “just calm down” as he responded.
