Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), commonly referred to as “MTG,” announced her intention to reintroduce articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Greene expressed her determination to bring the issue back to the House floor after the Thanksgiving break, emphasizing the need to address border security concerns and uphold the rule of law. This move comes after the House Homeland Security Committee decided to investigate Mayorkas for alleged dereliction of duty, potentially leading to future impeachment proceedings. Despite facing some challenges within her own party, Greene remains committed to holding Mayorkas accountable.

Greene’s pursuit of Mayorkas’s impeachment is driven by her belief that Americans deserve security and sovereignty. She argues that immediate action is necessary to address pressing issues such as drug trafficking and the potential for terrorist attacks. As a member of the Homeland Committee, Greene has been witness to the anguish of parents who have lost their children to drugs like fentanyl. The urgency of the situation fuels her determination to impeach Mayorkas.

“It’s absolutely outrageous,” Greene declares. “We have had hearing after hearing listening to parents cry over their children murdered by fentanyl. I mean, we are wondering how many … dead American bodies are going to have to pile up before Republicans in Congress get serious about impeaching Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.”

Last week, Greene’s resolution to impeach Mayorkas was referred to the House Homeland Security Committee. While all voting Democrats supported the motion, eight Republicans joined them, effectively postponing the impeachment process. This bipartisan decision reflects the Republican lawmakers’ desire to ensure a thorough investigation and a conviction in the Senate. Given the current Democratic control of the Senate, any impeachment attempt would face an uphill battle. However, some Republicans, like Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), view the delay as an opportunity to build a stronger case and force House Democrats to defend the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis.

“We voted to launch hearings and make our case to the entire nation,” explains Rep. Issa. “If we impeached Mayorkas today, the Senate would have rejected it today. House Democrats will now have to defend Biden or admit his border disaster. We can win this.”

In response to the ongoing impeachment efforts, the Department of Homeland Security has criticized what it calls “reckless impeachment charades” by congressional Republicans. A spokesperson for the department expressed disdain for the diversion of resources and attention from critical national security matters. While Mayorkas and the department remain focused on addressing border issues, they view the impeachment attempts as political posturing rather than genuine attempts to improve national security.

The Republican Party is not united in its approach to Mayorkas’s potential impeachment. While some Republicans, like Greene, advocate for immediate action, others prefer a more strategic approach. The GOP holdouts argue that rushing the impeachment process could lead to a swift rejection in the Senate, undermining their efforts. They believe that a more meticulous investigation and presentation of evidence will increase the likelihood of a successful conviction. Despite these differences in strategy, there is a shared desire among Republicans to hold Mayorkas accountable for his actions.
