Liberal Announces Primary Bid Against Biden — But There’s One Major Problem
Cenk Uygur, the progressive commentator and founder of ‘The Young Turks,’ announced his intent to run for President of the United States. But there’s a monumental hiccup in Uygur’s grand plan – he is not a natural-born citizen of the United States, a requirement as per the Constitution for anyone vying for the Presidency.
Uygur, originally an immigrant from Turkey, seems to be under a delusion that the U.S. Constitution’s “natural born citizen” clause would not disqualify him from campaigning for the Democratic Party’s 2024 nomination against Joe Biden.
In conversation with Semafor, Uygur optimistically predicted a “slam dunk” victory if and when the issue reaches the U.S. Supreme Court, suggesting the legal challenge was a “good reason” to run. He stated, “I’m tired of 25 million Americans having this albatross around their neck.”
Uygur’s announcement was met with widespread mockery on social media. Larry O’Connor, a talk radio host, pointed out the irony of Uygur’s campaign, saying, “His first act as a candidate for president is to violate the constitution of the United States because he is not a natural born citizen. Actually, this kind of makes him the perfect candidate for the Democrats.”
Former Tennessee congressional candidate Robby Starbuck also weighed in, accusing Uygur of potentially committing fraud by taking donations while being ineligible to run for president.
Uygur’s eligibility for the presidential race is indeed a glaring issue. As stated in Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution: “No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President.”
Despite this constitutional roadblock, Uygur seems undeterred. His ActBlue page showed that he had garnered 732 donations at the time of writing. Whether this support will translate into a successful legal challenge or a change in constitutional law remains to be seen.
This bold move by Uygur, however misguided it may seem, has certainly stirred up the political landscape. As President Biden continues to dominate the 2024 Democratic Party primary polls, Uygur’s audacious bid, though constitutionally questionable, has added an unexpected twist to the upcoming presidential race.
