The Fetterman Rule: Schumer’s Senate Circus Now Allows Hoodies and Shorts
In a shocking display of sartorial anarchy, the U.S. Senate has decided to abandon its dress code enforcement in what is being dubbed as “The Fetterman Rule.” The move comes after Senator John Fetterman (D-PA), infamously known for his disregard of the Senate’s dress code, made headlines with his casual attire. This outrageous decision marks a new low for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who directed the Senate’s sergeant-at-arms to stop enforcement.
Axios reported that this change will go into effect next week, turning the Senate floor into a potential fashion disaster zone. “Senators are able to choose what they wear on the Senate floor. I will continue to wear a suit,” Schumer said, likely breathing a sigh of relief that he can now blend into the background amid the expected onslaught of fashion faux pas.
However, this change only affects senators, not their staff members. “Senators can now [wear] whatever they want. However, others entering the chamber must comply with the dress code. Coats/ties for men. Business attire for women,” Fox News journalist Chad Pergram confirmed.
This shift towards casual attire seems tailored to accommodate Fetterman, who appears to have a penchant for hoodies and shorts. The Associated Press reported that he often skirted around the rules by voting from the doorway of the Democratic cloakroom or side entrance. Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT) even joked, “He’s setting a new dress code.”
Fetterman’s preference for comfortable clothing was seen as a sign of recovery after his struggle with depression and anxiety following a near-fatal stroke last year. However, one must question whether personal struggles should dictate the decorum of the Senate floor.
When news broke of this latest dress code shakeup, senators and others reacted on social media. “Double standard?” asked Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). “Will we see [Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)] in jorts and a tank top?” quipped Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO).

This casual dress code fiasco is not just an embarrassment for the Senate; it’s a slap in the face of tradition and decorum. It’s clear that under Schumer’s leadership, the Senate is fast becoming a circus, where hoodies are preferred over suits, and tradition is trampled under the guise of progressiveness.
As the world watches in disbelief, one thing is clear: the dignity and honor of the Senate are hanging by a thread. Will senators uphold the tradition and respect of the Senate? Or will they succumb to the lure of casual attire, further eroding the prestige of this great institution?
