Trump to Avoid Upcoming Republican Debates
This year is a very important year for the elections. This is the year where the prospective field grows and begins to diminish slowly. Candidates will start showing their strengths during public debates and we’ll get a good idea of who has a chance and who does not.
As many have already been expecting, President Trump is unlikely to take part in the Republican Party’s primary debates, according to one of his senior advisors. In an interview Tuesday on NewsNation’s “The Hill,” Jason Miller, Trump’s top advisor, noted that it would make no sense for the former president to join what is essentially a low-single-digit race between other contenders.
“It really wouldn’t make much sense for him to go and debate right now with a bunch of folks who are down at three, four and five percent,” Miller continued.
“So ultimately, President Trump will make a decision as we get closer,” he concluded. “He has not said anything definitive, one way or the other. I’m not expecting him to participate, though.”
The current frontrunner in the primaries is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who told Fox News last week that he plans to attend the debate regardless of whether or not Trump shows up. “I’ll be there, regardless,” DeSantis stated. “I hope everybody who is eligible comes. I think it is an important part of the process, and I look forward to being able to be on the stage and introducing our candidacy and our vision and our leadership to a wide audience.”
New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu seemingly mocked Trump over speculation that he may try to avoid taking part in the debates due to possible lack of performance, laughing as he told Fox News host Sandra Smith: “Former President Trump, the tough guy? The guy that says he’s gonna fight for America, but he’s not willing to stand up, he’s gonna wimp out? Wimp out and not get on that debate stage?”
