According to a recent poll, Vice President Kamala Harris has received lower approval ratings than any previous vice president since the poll was started back in 1995. The poll shows that 32% of registered voters have a positive opinion of Harris, while 49% have a negative one, resulting in a net-negative rating of -17. In addition, 39% of respondents have a “very negative” view of her. This information was reported by NBC News on Monday.

The news outlet investigated the lowest approval rating in over two decades. They examined surveys dating back to 1995 and found that only one other president, Mike Pence, had a negative rating, which was -4 in October 2019. By comparison, Joe Biden’s approval rating is only slightly above positive. When Biden was vice president in December 2010, his rating was +1, with 34% positive and 33% negative.

In May 2003, Dick Cheney had a 47% positive rating and a 24% negative rating, resulting in a +23 split. The earliest ratings NBC News examined were from March 1995, when Gore had a 42% positive rating and a 27% negative rating, resulting in a +15 split.

Harris, who previously served as attorney general of California and as a U.S. senator, is the first woman, first Black American, and first South Asian American to hold the position of vice president. However, she has faced criticism for her handling of the Biden administration’s efforts to address the migration issue at the U.S.-Mexico border. Additionally, some people have made fun of her public speeches due to the use of complicated and confusing language.

In April, Biden announced his plan to run for re-election in 2024 and decided to keep Harris as his running mate, even though her approval ratings were low. According to Axios, the White House and Biden’s campaign had been trying to improve her public image as they were concerned that she could negatively impact the campaign.

Former White House chief of staff Ron Klain and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel are among those who defend Harris, claiming that her lack of popularity is due to racism and sexism. Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) also expressed confidence in Harris, saying that she is prepared to assume the role of president if the need arises. He further stated that both he and Biden have faith in her abilities.

According to a recent poll by NBC News, a growing number of registered voters have concerns about Biden’s ability to serve due to his mental and physical health. About 68% of respondents expressed moderate to major concerns, while only 43% approved of his job performance and 53% disapproved.

According to the survey, if there was a rematch of the general election, Biden would have 49% support while former President Donald Trump, who usually leads GOP primary polls, would have 45% support. The survey also showed that in a hypothetical match-up between Biden and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, they would tie with 47% support each in the general election.

“A majority of Americans have deep, deep concerns about Biden’s physical and mental state; Kamala Harris is the least liked Vice President in the poll’s history; and notwithstanding both, Biden/Harris would still beat Trump,” conservative radio host Erick Erickson said about the poll. “All the GOP has to do is avoid Trump, and many of them won’t let him go.”
