On Thursday, Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had a long meeting at the White House where they discussed their commitment to working together in the face of challenging global issues. However, during the meeting, Joe Biden did not mention the name of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who demonstrated exceptional leadership during World War II.

The British prime minister had to help fill in the gaps of Biden’s fading memory, which made for an awkward occasion.

“If we had time, I’d take you over to the residence where I live,” Biden said. “And when you were over in Blair House, the President Truman was there because they were redoing the White House. He put a hole in the Truman Balcony, exists now because of Blair House Ville that, of that second balcony, you see the first balcony you see going up.”

“So at any rate and there’s an awful lot of stories that are told with… probably a bunch apocryphal… about former Prime Minister like you take bass of the, anyway…”

“Wandering round at three in the morning,” Sunak helpfully chimed in. “Yeah. Winston Churchill, bothering Mrs. Roosevelt. Yes. So you won’t, don’t worry, you won’t see me there.”

During the leaders’ meeting in the Oval Office, Biden and Sunak discussed several topics such as the war in Ukraine, economic security, China, and international cooperation on regulating artificial intelligence. Even though they had already met face-to-face four times since Sunak started his job in October, this Washington summit gave them the chance to have their most significant interaction yet.

“We will put our values front and center,” stated Biden.

In the past, the two leaders had some uncomfortable moments. For example, during a celebration of the Hindu holiday of Diwali, Biden mispronounced Sunak’s name. Additionally, at a meeting in March, Biden made a statement about being invited to Sunak’s home in California, which unintentionally brought up previous political controversies about Sunak’s possession of a U.S. green card while he was serving as chancellor of the exchequer.

This is the first visit of British Prime Minister Sunak to Washington after assuming office.

“Our economies are experiencing perhaps the most significant transformation since the Industrial Revolution, as new technologies provide incredible opportunities but also give our adversaries more tools,” Sunak commented on Thursday.

Sunak declared that the U.K. will strive to become a significant contributor to the field of artificial intelligence. He disclosed the government’s plans to organize a summit on AI safety during the autumn season. The summit will bring together politicians, scientists, and tech executives to discuss crucial issues. Sunak highlighted the significance of incorporating revolutionary technologies and emphasized the need for collaboration on a worldwide scale.
