Liberal Activist Who Took on Fox News Facing Prison for Shocking Crime
You may not know her by name, but I’m willing to bet that you know this crazy lady once you see her face.
Cathy Areu, a 51-year-old former Fox News regular known as the “Liberal Sherpa”, was arrested in Miami, Florida on Friday for allegedly kidnapping her 88-year-old mother and financially extorting her.
It is alleged that Areu stole over $224,000 from her elderly mother, including money from a reverse mortgage, and opened credit cards in her mother’s name.
The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office press release states that Areu had been evading arrest and may have even gone to Mexico.
Areu was well-known for appearing as an unpaid guest on Fox News to provide “liberal analysis” and for hosting the podcast “Liberal Sherpa.”. In 2020, she sued the network over harassment claims, but the judge later dismissed the case.
The news of Areu’s arrest has shocked many people who were familiar with her work. Areu has been a vocal advocate for progressive causes and was an outspoken critic of the Trump administration. She had made dozens of appearances on Fox News, CNN, and other networks as a pundit.
Areu’s arrest has brought attention to the issue of elder financial exploitation, which is a growing problem in the United States. According to the National Adult Protective Services Association, financial exploitation of the elderly is estimated to cost older Americans over $2.9 billion a year.
For Areu, the consequences of her alleged actions are severe. If convicted, she could face up to 30 years in prison. This is a cautionary tale for those who would take advantage of the elderly for personal gain. It is a reminder for us all to be vigilant in protecting our loved ones from exploitation.
