Obviously, the big talk in Washington right now is what they’re going to do, or not do about gun control.

Just recently, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer shut down a few proposals from both Democrats and Republicans on ways to address gun violence.

Following a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that left at least 19 people dead, some Republicans are considering caving in to Democrats’ calls for tighter federal gun rules.

Democrats have long sought for stronger gun control at the federal level, but Republicans have resisted these measures, emphasizing Second Amendment rights as justification. Some Republicans now appear to be willing to soften their stance.

Most notably, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) claimed during a CNN interview that he had asked Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) to talk with some centrist Democrats, including Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), in an attempt to reach a compromise package.

“I’ve encouraged him to talk to Senator Sinema, Senator Murphy, and others who are interested in trying to get an outcome that’s directly related to the problem,” McConnell said, adding that he is “hopeful that we could come up with a bipartisan solution that’s directly related to the facts of this awful massacre.”

I really don’t know what they’re proposing as of yet, but whatever it is, I’m sure it’ll be invasive and non-productive.

Honestly, I don’t have any problem with background checks across the board. I don’t think that it is that big of a deal. I know that I may not be in the majority of conservative thought with that view, but to me it is logical. If we’re willing to withhold criminals from owning firearms because they do criminal acts with them, then I don’t think it’s unreasonable to make sure that standard goes across the board. Would that stop criminals from obtaining guns entirely? Absolutely, not. There is no one thing that can be done to fix the problem of gun violence in our country. It will take a multi-faceted approach to do that.
