Suspected Killer of Baseball Pitcher’s Family Caught Running Around Naked
In a very tragic incident, an 18-year old man murdered the family of a minor league pitcher in a triple homicide.
The man was arrested on Tuesday after a manhunt which resulted in running to stay clear from the man who was running around naked, even after being pepper-sprayed.
The Washington Post reported,
Matthew Thomas Bernard was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, WDBJ reported. Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor declined to identify the victims, but ESPN reported that they were the wife, son and mother-in-law of Blake Bivens, a 24-year-old pitcher for the Montgomery Biscuits, the Class AA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
On Tuesday, the Biscuits announced they were canceling a doubleheader “due to a tragic event within the Biscuits family.” The team’s CEO and managing owner, Lou DiBella, later shared a statement, writing that Bivens had “suffered unimaginable loss.”
According to Fox News,
WSET-TV reported, citing a criminal complaint, that a neighbor of Bernard’s told police that before she heard gunshots coming from the victims’ home, the suspect came to her house and punched her in the yard. The neighbor reportedly told police she found the body of Joan Bernard, Bernard’s mother, in the driveway of the home.
A deputy later discovered the bodies of Emily Bivens and her young child with gunshot wounds to the head and a bloodied sledgehammer, according to the criminal complaint. Bernard is also accused of killing the family dog.
The victims were later identified as the wife, mother-in-law and son of the pitcher Bivens.
Jackie Poe, a senior pastor of The River Church in Danville, told the AP on Wednesday that the minor league prospect was a longtime member of the church and he and his wife would come to services during the baseball offseason.
In the video, it seems apparent that the man is on some sort of drugs based on his behavior. It really seems to be the only thing that makes much sense based on all the details of the incident.
